Observations





status of Velt-plants, 1 month later (dd.3/12/2014)
date: 2014-12-04
A lot of plants from Velt did not survive their transplant into the Invisible Garden. The basil died, but can sprout again. The bean is completely dried up. The sproutplant suffered heavily from aphids. All lettuce plants (3 different strands) decomposted, as well as the parsley. The chervil starts to make new leaves after a heavy suffering.












1 month later - observation early december 2014

This is an update of the status of the vegetable garden on 3/12/2014 - one month after the creation of the Invisible Garden early november. In general, the plants are doing good. It is clear that there are very strong plants, and much weaker plants.
Looking into the plants of the Vegetable Garden, this is the status on 3/12/2014: the Buxus are all OK, as well as the Hedera helix, the Photinia fraseri, the Lonicera and the ferns. They all make new leaves and they are in good shape.
From the plants bought at Willaert only the Eleaegnus ebbingei is under big stress. A flea is attacking the leaves and the larves of this insect leave white threads on the plant.
The vegetables from the PTI -the sprouts and the cabbages- suffer from aphids. This is probably due to not enough watering during the early days of the garden.
The Beta vulgaris rubra (beetroot) and the celeriac (knolselder) are doing fine, as well as the strawberries and the Beta vulgaris (snijbiet, warmoes, russian frills) and the kale (palmkool). They all make new young leaves.
The good news: a few butterflies are born in the vegetable garden. They came as a caterpiller with the cabbages from the PTI and they grew to an adult imago in our garden! There are also worms and snails.
The ecosystem starts up. Very soon we'll introduce some natural ennemies to bring the system in balance.
The PTI will also feed the plants with Wuxal, a liquid fertiliser.










Cacopsylla fulguralis - bladvlo

Een plaag van bladvlo (Cacopsylla fulguralis) heeft de Eleagnus ebbengei aangevallen. De volwassen vlo, afkomstig uit Azië, is ongeveer 4mm lang, springt (vandaar vlo) en legt eieren onderaan het blad van de Eleagnus. Fijne wassliertjes worden uitgescheiden door ±3mm grote larven van deze bladvlo. De larven zuigen de suikers uit de plant en scheiden honingdauw af, die dan weer een ideale voedingsbodem is voor een schimmel die roetdauw genoemd wordt en de bladeren zwart maakt.
Verschillende van de planten zijn er zeer erg aan toe. De zwarte bladeren laten geen licht meer door en zullen uiteindelijk afvallen vermits er geen photosynthese meer kan plaatsvinden.
Via het PTI kom ik in contact met de firma Kolpert die nuttige insecten levert om dit soort van plagen tegen te gaan.
Er is nog geen specifiek nuttig insect dat tgo. deze bladvlo-plaag staat, maar Crysopa, een gaasvlieg wiens larven geleverd worden op boekweitblaadjes, staat ervoor bekend om ongeveer alle soorten van bladluisen en -vlooien te eten.
Op hoop van zege zetten we deze nuttige insecten dan maar uit op de bladeren van de Eleagnus ebbengei.

SEM photographs and Blender simulations

I collect pollen grains from the plants in the garden. This material is studied with the Scanning Electron Microscope. Afterwards, it serves as inspiration and mimicry for creating digital objects in Blender 3D.
The ain is to create eventually some 3D honeybees, starting from a collection of drawings and objects.

Blackboard in the Vegetable Garden

I installed a large blackboard in the vegetable garden. The board is a tool for communicating with the public at one hand, and at the other hand it serves as a notebook for remarks and reminders between the different groups taking care of the garden. The students of the PTI can leave a note when they watered the plants, the gardeners of Velt can make an observation about their plants.

There are 2 movies on the screen in the vegetable garden. One is about the micro-organisms living in the compostheap, these little animals that break down steadily our food leftovers and turn them into rich and fertile humus. Cradle to cradle. The second movie is a microscopic discovery of the universe made by the groundcover plants in a garden. We see observe, stems, leaves and mushrooms.

The gardeners from LeiLekkerLand (Velt Kortrijk) gave me some old varieties of vegetables to plant in the Invisible Garden: warmoes of snijbiet (Beta vulgaris), basilicum (Ocimum), sla (Lactuca), ruccola (Eruca sativa), boon (Vicia faba), spruit (Brassica oleracea var.gemmifera), rode biet (Beta vulgaris rubra), paardenbloem (Taraxacum officinale), peterselie (Petroselinum crispum), ruwe sla (Lactuca sativa), raap (Brassica rapa), eikebladsla , kervel (Anthriscus cerefolium), duizendblad (Achillea millefolium), nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) oostindische kers, look (Allium sativum)

Vegetables from the PTI

The PTI (agriculture school Kortrijk) supplied me with a range of traditional winter vegetables. There are different cabbages (red, white, green), Brussels' sprouts, Mangold (boerenkool) and celeriac (knolselder). We grow these vegetables in the left side of the garden. The videoscreen is positioned in the middle of the vegetables.






Zone #04 : the Vegetable Garden

The Invisible Garden is a construction in the process of transformation. I want to make visible the structures that tend to escape general notice, and visualise the different connections that can be established between the elements of the garden ecosystem.
I ask questions about the current state of our ecosystems, about the use of green spaces in our cities, and I want to provoke a dialogue about the different elements that make up the physical reality of our urban landscape that is in a constant transformation.


Sociological Description

The garden design by AnneMarie Maes is realized with the help of Balthazar de Tonnac (code and electronics), Billy Bultheel (sound processing), AnneMarie Maes (artworks, database and plants). The horticulture students from the PTI (Provinciaal Technisch Instituut) and the gardeners from VELT ( Vereniging Ecologisch Leven en Tuinieren) will do interventions in the vegetable and herb garden.


Ecological Description

The garden is conceived according to the traditions of permaculture, respecting the principle of the 7 layers. The plants are selected on their edible and melliferous qualities, they create a subtle ecosystem that is favorable for humans and honeybees. Different plant species have been carefully selected to cohabit and thus approach as much as possible the complex ecological web that we find in natural environments.
Throughout the garden we discover a series of hidden poetic memories (audio, video). AnneMarie Maes is fascinated in structures created by Nature, structures that are often not visible unless you look at it through an artistic eye and with the technological tools of modern science. Within the garden are hidden examples, shown on small embedded screens, of the extraordinary structures that AnneMarie Maes draws our attention to.
In the Mediterrenean Garden the autumn-palet of the waving grasses lure the visitor inside the semi-dim room. Once deeper inside the installation, a colder and more exact laboratorium setup takes the overtone. Every plant is tagged with a QR-code. The plant’s evolution throughout the exhibition is updated in the OpenGreens database and this information can be tracked via mobile devices.


General Description

The Invisible Garden is a large-size art installation in the exhibition ‘the Green Light District : the place of Nature in the city of Men’. The garden is a remake of the Edible Forest Garden, the Open Air Laboratorium created by the artist AnneMarie Maes on her rooftop in the center of Brussels. The Invisible Garden is a sitespecific project that reverses the relation between nature and art. The transitions between inside and outside, culture and staged nature, become fluid and transitory.
The garden can be seen as a giant roof garden, as it covers an entire room of 200m2 on the first floor of the old Buda textile factory. Roughly four zones can be distinguished: the naturalistic mediterrenean garden, with olive trees and grasses, the edible forest garden, with bee-friendly trees, shrubs and ground covers, the vegetable garden with perennial and annual plants and the herb garden with medicinal plants.
